The unique long-distance view, which in clear weather extends to the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön and the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, makes it a popular excursion and hiking destination.
The approximately 148-hectare terrain around the mountain plateau is now a beautiful landscape conservation area. The most famous hiking trail in Thuringia runs directly over the hilltop: the Rennsteig. It originally formed the border between the Principality of Saxe-Gotha-Coburg and Prussia. Visitors can enjoy a 360° panoramic view from the 21 meter high observation tower.
Parts of the original transmission technology from the former telecommunications tower are shown on the lower floors. The tower is also an extraordinary climbing location: on the outside facade there is a 17 meter high climbing wall with a climbing machine as an ideal "climbing partner". A three meter high bouldering wall is available for beginners and children.
